IN COOPERATION WITH KIRIKKALE UNIVERSITY, TÜRKIYE, FADIB HOSTS A VIRTUAL SEMINAR: HOW TO SURVIVE AS A TRANSLATOR IN THE ERA OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Thursday, December 14 2023. Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences UIN Sunan Kalijaga held Bi-Weekly Forum #47, a virtual seminar entitled "How to Survive as a Translator in the World of Artificial Intelligence." The speaker at this forum is Dr. Zeynep Başer from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kırıkkale University, Türkiye.

On this occasion, Dr. Zeynep Başer conveyed in his material that translation practices in the Islamic world, especially Turkiye, had an important role in the country's journey from the Caliphate era to the era of renewal and the nation-state era as modern Turkey today. Artificial Intelligence, which refers to automation, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Machine Vision, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) influences translation work. NLP, for example, this application can be used to translate various texts from one language to another, including being able to create news reports based on keywords provided by the user. Some examples include Translator's Workbench and Translator Memory, Microsoft Translator, Systran, and ChatGPT from OpenAI.

Apart from that, she continued, AI provides many advantages, especially in terms of speed in the translation process and low or even free costs. On the other hand, among the shortcomings of AI for translation are that AI cannot translate local norms and traditions and the lack of vocabulary or dialect that suits the translator's needs. However, to cover this shortcoming, post-translation support is now available to improve the translation results.

Dr. Zeynep believes, based on several studies, that collaborating with AI will provide more benefits in the field of translation than negative aspects. Another study showed that 80% of young people under 40 have a positive attitude towards AI, 52.6% of students use AI for translation, and 73.7% believe that its accuracy rate reaches 80%.

This bi-weekly discussion starts from 13.00 to 15.00 and was moderated by Dr. Witriani, S.S. M. Hum from the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
