Bi-Weekly Forum #3 Book Discussion: Fighting for Virtual Public Space (Literacy, Hoax, and Peace)

On Friday, March 5, 2021 at 13.30-15.00 WIB, the Bi-Weekly Forum held a book discussion entitled Fighting for Virtual Public Spaces (Literacy, Hoax, and Peace) by invited a guest speaker that was the author of the book, Thoriq Tri Prabowo, M.I.P (Lecturer of Library Science at UIN Sunan Kalijaga). As the moderator was Ahmad Anwar, MA (Lecturer of Library Science at UIN Sunan Kalijaga).

The discussion was conducted online via Zoom Meeting and also broadcasted via Live Youtube on the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Studies Youtube Channel. The Bi-Weekly Forum #3 was different from usual because it invited 2 Sign Language Interpreters as co-presenters. With the help of the Sign Language Interpreter, it was hoped that it would make it easier for participants to understand the material presented, especially for participants with hearing loss, etc. The Bi-Weekly Forum #3 this time was attended by approximately 145 participants from various backgrounds.

The informant said that virtual public spaces were significantly increasing every year. Moreover, the industrial revolution 4.0 had an impact on all aspects of life, such as the world of education, politics, culture, religion, economy, and especially in social media. Social media, said the source, could bring opportunities and challenges, depending on the users of social media themselves. The current pandemic (covid-19) had forced the use of online media to do many activities.

At the end of the discussion, the moderator concluded that social media had enormous power in today's life, and it was necessary for social media users to be smarter and wiser in social media, to be smarter and more thorough in responding to hoaxes.
