A Brief History

The Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences is one of the five faculties that have existed since Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga was still named IAIN Sunan Kalijaga. The establishment of faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences began with the department of Arabic Literature, which was opened for the first time based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Community Guidance Number: Kep / D.IV / 218/61 on October 12, 1961. Since 1970, with the issuance of Regulation of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5 in 1970, by adding another study program, namely Islamic History and Culture, the Department of Arabic Literature was upgraded to the Faculty of Adab. After six years of changing IAIN to UIN, in 2010 the Faculty of Adab changed its name to the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences which was determined based on the Decree of the Chancellor of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Number 36 of 2010 dated February 18, 2010.

In 1997, the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences opened a new study program, namely the Diploma Program (D3) in Islamic Library and Information Science based on the Decree of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number: E / 369/1997. Along with the increasing public interest in this study program, in 2002 the bachelor program of Library Science and Islamic Information was opened based on the Rector's Decree Number 65 of 2002, which was confirmed by the Decree of the Minister of National Education Number 05 / MPN / HK / 2004. In order to meet the demands of the times and the needs of society, in 2010 the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences UIN Sunan Kalijaga. opened the bachelor program in English Literature that was established based on the Decree of the Minister of National Education in 2010.  

In order to meet the demands of the changing times and science as well as the needs of the community for quality education, the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences UIN Sunan Kalijaga also continues to develop, both in institutional and scientific aspects. This was done by opening a Master Program (S2) in Arabic Language and Literature and a Master program (S2) in Islamic History and Culture. The permit for the implementation of the two study programs is based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number 3543 of 2016 dated 22 June 2016, and strengthened by the Decree of the Chancellor Number 145.3 of 2016 concerning the Implementation of the Study Programs in the Master Program of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences dated 29 July 2016.

For more than fifty years of working in the world of education, the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences has produced a large number of alumni who play a role in society, either as educators, bureaucrats, leaders of educational institutions, politicians, entrepreneurs or various other professions. From the student side, the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences has also developed quite rapidly. The number of active students from the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences was 2,137 (in 2017). Meanwhile, the number of graduates until 2017 was 6,355 students from all regions in Indonesia and even Southeast Asia (Malaysia and Thailand). The number of permanent lecturers is 85 lecturers, while the non-permanent lecturers (extraordinary lecturers) are 2 people. To support learning activities, the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences has 20 educational staff consisting of librarians, laboratory assistants and administrative staff, as well as 6 contract workers.

Institutionally, the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences UIN Sunan Kalijaga has built a fairly well-established foundation. In 2020, of the 6 (six) departments / study programs in the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, all have been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT). The six departments / study programs are:
