Bridging Technology and Spirituality: Prof. Dr. Nurdin, S.Ag., S.S., M.A. Introduces Information Fiqh at I-LISS 2026

SHAH ALAM, MALAYSIA — The Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Prof. Nurdin Laugu, delivered an address as an Invited Speaker at The 10th International Library and Information Science Society Conference (I-LISS 2026), held at UiTM Malaysia on August 26–28, 2026. Presenting on the concept of "Information Fiqh," he outlined an Islamic ethical framework to address the rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academia, aiming to prevent digital plagiarism and cognitive laziness among students.

Prof. Nurdin highlighted four core pillars of Information Fiqh for AI utilization: Tawhid/Muraqabah (awareness of Divine oversight), Tabayyun (rigorous data verification against primary sources), Siddiq & Amanah (honesty and transparent attribution), and Maslahah (public benefit and safeguarding critical intellect). Based on these principles, he categorized AI usage into four ethical typologies: Obligatory (Necessary) for work efficiency that drives social benefit, Permissible as an assistive tool for brainstorming and grammar editing, Disliked (Reproachable) if it replaces reading original texts and dulls analytical skills, and Prohibited (Forbidden) for total plagiarism, data fabrication, or spreading academic hoaxes.

This conceptual model is backed by empirical research on Library Science students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, showing a moderate-to-strong positive correlation (r = 0.633) between Information Fiqh awareness and ethical AI practices. The data reveals that students primarily use AI for initial ideation (76.8%) and language editing (71–76%), with 83.6% actively verifying AI-generated citations against primary literature. These findings demonstrate that Islamic spiritual values serve as an effective internal self-regulatory mechanism for academics navigating emerging technologies.
