Book Dissemination: Semiotics for the Study of the Qur'an and Arabic Literature with Prof. Dr. Bermawy Munthe, MA
.
Semiotics is one of the popular research methods in qualitative research to reveal the signs and meaning behind one or various signs. This method stems from the assumption of Emile Durkheim that society's culture produces hundreds or even thousands of signs in the form of words, pictures, gestures, and material objects. The study of semiotics seeks to examine these signs and what the meaning behind them is. Ferdinand de Saussure, the Father of Semiotics, developed Emile Durkheim's thinking by dividing the sign into two, namely the signifier and the signified.
In order to understand more about semiotics, Bi-Weekly Forum #23 Faculty of Adab and Cultural Studies UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta held a book dissemination by Prof. Dr. Bermawy Munthe, MA entitled "Semiotics (Theory, Methods, and Applications in Arabic Literature and Al-Qur'an Research)".
In the virtual discussion, the professor and lecturer at the Arabic Language and Literature Study Program, Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, explained that the creation of this work was intended to describe the theory of semiotics in a simple manner along with examples of its application. He hopes that the book can be a guide in understanding semiotic theory, especially for lecturers and students at Islamic universities. From a number of figures in semiotic theory, this book pays special attention to the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes, Charles Sanders Pierce, and Michael Riffaterre. Prof. Bermawy Munthe applies the theory of semiotics to examine several letters in the Koran such as the letter Yasin and Arabic literary works such as the short story by Naguib Mahfouz, an Egyptian writer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988.
The Bi-Weekly Forum #23 event was attended by a number of lecturers and students from the Faculty of Adab and Cultural Studies UIN Sunan Kalijaga as well as academics from a number of other campuses. This event took place on Friday, December 17, 2021. After being opened by the MC, Dr. Andi Holilullah, MA, this event was guided by Azis, MA, a lecturer at the History of Islamic Culture Program, Faculty of Adab and Cultural Sciences UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
